I didn't get my verification email.
Verification emails come from verify@vaultchat.co. Check your spam folder first. If it isn't there, the most common causes are a typo in the email address you entered, or a corporate email gateway blocking the message. Try signing up again with a personal address (Gmail, iCloud, Outlook) and email us at support@vaultchat.co if it still doesn't arrive within 5 minutes.
I forgot my real PIN. How do I get back in?
Your real PIN is stored only on your device โ for your security, we cannot reset it remotely. You can wipe and reinstall VaultChat to clear the PIN, but doing so will delete your local message history (your account itself stays intact, and you'll be able to sign back in normally).
What's the difference between Real PIN, Decoy PIN, and Vault PIN?
- Real PIN unlocks the app at the biometric/PIN lock screen.
- Decoy PIN unlocks the app into an empty/fake chat list. Useful if someone is forcing you to unlock VaultChat โ entering the decoy PIN makes the app look like you barely use it.
- Vault PIN reveals chats you've moved into the vault from inside the normal app. Long-press the "Chats" title and enter the PIN to switch the list to vault-only.
How do I delete my account?
Settings โ Privacy โ Delete Account. Account deletion is permanent. Your account record is removed, your message history is purged from our servers, and your handle becomes available for reuse after 30 days.
Messaging
What does "encrypted" mean for my messages?
Every direct message and every message in a group chat is encrypted on your device using your private key and decrypted only on the recipient's device. We can't read message contents from the server. The only way we ever see message content is if a recipient uses the in-app Report flow and explicitly checks the box to forward a copy of a specific message to our safety team.
Why does someone's name show as "Unknown"?
Display names are saved on your device when you add a contact. If you signed in on a new phone or wiped the app, your contact list resets โ sync your phone contacts (Settings โ Privacy โ Sync Contacts) or rename them by tapping the chat header.
What is a "view-once" message?
View-once photos and videos are visible exactly once. After you tap to view, the file is wiped from your device and from VaultChat's servers. Screenshots are detected and the sender is notified, but cannot be technically prevented on iOS โ treat view-once as discouragement, not impossibility.
Can I edit a message I already sent?
Yes โ long-press your own message and tap Edit. Edits are allowed within 24 hours of sending. After that the message is locked.
What is Vault mode?
Vault mode hides specific chats behind a separate PIN so they don't appear in your chat list at all. To see them, long-press the "Chats" title and enter your Vault PIN. The vault re-locks automatically when you background the app. To set it up, go to Settings โ Privacy โ Vault PIN, then long-press a chat in the list and choose "Move to Vault."
Calls
The other person didn't get my call.
Calls require both devices to be online. If the recipient's app was just killed by iOS, they may take a few seconds to wake up โ try again. If their phone is in airplane mode, has no service, or has VaultChat's notifications disabled, the call won't ring through. Check that you're both signed in and on the latest version.
Why does my call drop after a minute when I switch apps?
VaultChat uses CallKit to keep calls alive in the background. If your call drops when switching apps, you may have denied microphone or background audio permission. Open iOS Settings โ VaultChat and verify Microphone is enabled.
Can I add more people to a call after it starts?
Yes. During a call, tap the "+ Add" button to invite another person from your contact list. The call promotes from 1:1 to a conference call automatically.
Is the video call really HD?
Video resolution adapts to your connection. On a strong connection (Wi-Fi or 5G) you'll get up to 720p. On a weak connection we drop to 360p with forward error correction so the call stays smooth. The chip in the call screen shows your current connection quality.

How do I cancel my Premium subscription?
Cancellation is handled by Apple, not by VaultChat. Open your iPhone's Settings โ tap your name at the top โ Subscriptions โ VaultChat Premium โ Cancel Subscription. Your Premium access remains active until the end of the current billing period.
I subscribed on another device โ how do I unlock Premium here?
Open VaultChat โ Settings โ tap any premium feature โ in the upgrade sheet, tap Restore Purchases at the bottom. This re-checks your Apple ID for an active subscription.
Can I get a refund?
Refunds are issued by Apple, not by VaultChat. Apple's general policy: visit reportaproblem.apple.com, find the VaultChat Premium charge, and tap Report a Problem. Apple typically grants refunds for accidental purchases or unused subscriptions.
Privacy & Safety
How do I block someone?
Long-press any message they've sent โ tap Report โ at the bottom of the form, check Also block this user (it's checked by default). They won't be able to message or call you anymore. They aren't notified that they were blocked. To manage your blocked list, go to Settings โ Privacy โ Blocked Users.
How do I report inappropriate content?
Long-press the message โ tap Report โ choose the category that fits. For child-safety reports, the urgent category surfaces at the top of our review queue. Optionally check the box to forward a copy of the content to our safety team โ this lets us review the actual content rather than just the metadata.
Will the person I report find out?
No. Reports are confidential. The reported user is not notified that they were reported, by whom, or what was reported.
What happens to my data if I delete my account?
Your account record, message history, contact list, and any VaultChat-stored content tied to your account are deleted. Your handle becomes available for reuse after 30 days. We retain a minimal record of your deletion for legal compliance purposes (e.g., to prevent ban evasion). See our Privacy Policy for the full retention schedule.
Troubleshooting
The app won't open after a recent update.
Try force-quitting (swipe up from the bottom of the screen, swipe VaultChat away) and re-opening. If that doesn't work, restart your iPhone. If the app still won't open, uninstall and reinstall โ your account and message history are stored in the cloud and will resync. Email bugs@vaultchat.co if the problem persists, including your iPhone model and iOS version.
I'm not getting notifications.
Open iOS Settings โ VaultChat โ Notifications โ verify Allow Notifications is on. Also check that Sounds and Banners are enabled. If notifications are silenced for VaultChat, also check that Focus mode (Settings โ Focus) isn't filtering us out.
The app is using a lot of battery.
Active calls and continuous background activity (e.g., a video call held open for hours) draw battery. Outside of calls, VaultChat should sit at near-zero usage. If you see consistently high battery use without active calls, please email bugs@vaultchat.co with a screenshot of iOS Settings โ Battery โ VaultChat.
